Winter Wellness Reminder
3 Jun 2026

Kia ora whānau,

As winter is now upon us, we kindly ask everyone to remain vigilant in helping us keep our tamariki and staff healthy and well.

As parents and caregivers, you know your child best. Often, you can tell when they are not quite themselves, even before obvious symptoms appear. If your child is unusually tired, grumpy, lethargic, clingy, lacking their normal energy, or simply not feeling well, we ask that you consider keeping them at home to rest and recover. While many children don't want to miss out on seeing their friends and attending daycare, a busy day at the centre when they are unwell can often leave them feeling worse and may slow their recovery. Giving them time to rest at home helps them get back to their happy, healthy selves sooner and reduces the spread of illness throughout the centre.

Please take a moment to read the attached Wellness Guide, which outlines when children should stay home and when they are well enough to attend the centre. During the colder months, illnesses can spread quickly, so it is important that we all work together to reduce the risk of infection within our learning community.

If your child is unwell, please keep them at home until they are feeling better and are able to participate comfortably in the day's activities. This helps protect the wellbeing of all tamariki, whānau, and staff.  As a reminder, children should stay home if they have symptoms such as:

  • A fever
  • A persistent cough
  • A continuous runny nose
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea
  • A sore throat
  • Unusual tiredness or lethargy
  • Any other symptoms outlined in the attached Wellness Guide

We understand that it can sometimes be disappointing or inconvenient if you are asked to take your child home or keep them at home due to illness. Please don't be offended if our staff have these conversations with you. These decisions are always made with the wellbeing of your child, the other tamariki, and our staff in mind.

Thank you for your support, understanding, and cooperation in helping us maintain a healthy environment for everyone. By working together, we can help ensure our tamariki have a safe, healthy, and happy environment to learn and play throughout the winter season.

Ngā mihi,

The Totara North Early Childhood Centre Team
